Is anyone experiencing video dropouts with WD Green drives?

Postby nick12 » Wed Jul 29, 2009 8:19 pm

Since I started using dvblogic and recording HD, I always get random video/audio corruption in live tv and recordings. It's like a stutter for maybe 2-3 seconds and then it synch's back up again and continues. It's not constant, but I'll usually get 1 or 2 per movie I record, which gets pretty annoying. My mobo and cpu are pretty new and decent, so I upgraded the vid card and added ram, but no luck. I then assumed it was the HDPVR causing it.

Then I moved my live tv buffer and recording path off of my WD Green drive (which has a variable RPM) to a regular WD drive, and all of a sudden my past 2 recordings have been stutter-free. Maybe it's just a fluke, so I'll need to keep testing, but has anyone else noticed HD recording issues with these Green drives?

I do have a 1TB WD Green drive and I get the same. I was also under the impression this is HDPVR related because when I watch Live TV I can see the RED light turn off for a short time.

I don't have an other drive on that system, so I cannot say if it can make a difference.

Maybe WD Green drives are causing some kind of DRC latencies that are, in turn, affecting the USB communication, which does finally affects HDPVR drivers.

I too have a WD Green drive as my recorded TV storage. Live TV plays perfectly, but while watching recorded TV i will sometimes get a audio dropout / glitch, pausing and playing again fixes it.

I ran the DPC Latency checker from this post;
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=2551

all green, i will run it again while watching recorded and see what happens.

I had some time today to play a little;

i am currently recording 2 streams to the WD Green drive, while watching a recorded program. All is working just fine. while all this is going on i have tried to stress the system, with not much success. i have been watching dpc latency very closely.

I would have it a guess that most of the dropouts are driver related, drivers that are not made for win 7 being the issue. But with that said, the main issue i have dealt with has been audio stutters / drop outs. I just changed the default audio decoder to AC3 filter using this guide http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/02/using-ac ... enter.html

My audio has been good since, but i am sure time will tell. Most of us are using the RC so we cannot expect it to be perfect, my hope is the RTM and win 7 drivers fix the current issues, but after my tests i do not think these dropouts are hdd related.

Well, 2 more recordings and no dropouts! Still don't know if it was the drive or something else, but SOMETHING is running better. If it happens again, I'll start running that DPC checker.

after my initial successes i must now admit that the changes i made to the audio codecs has not worked, in fact it may have made things worse.

I am waiting on the RTM release and will re do my system and hope that a new install helps.
